Henry Irving – Robespierre (1899)

En 1899, le célèbre acteur britannique Henry Irving a commandé une pièce au dramaturge français Victorien Sardou, déjà connu pour Thermidor : c’était Robespierre. Sardou a révisé un scénario de 1895, dans lequel Robespierre est abattu par son fils illégitime adulte ; dans la nouvelle pièce, il se tire une balle pour sauver ce fils de la guillotine. Ce récit était peut-être plus crédible pour Irving, âgé de soixante et un ans, que pour Robespierre, qui en avait à peine trente-six. Clarisse, l’ancienne amante aristocratique de Robespierre et mère de son fils, était interprétée par Ellen Terry, qui jouait souvent avec Irving et qui était en fait son ancienne amante.

La pièce a connu un grand succès et a été jouée en Grande-Bretagne et aux États-Unis. Cette brochure, illustrée par Harry Furniss dans le style Art nouveau, a été produite pour être vendue dans les théâtres. On ne sait pas qui a écrit le texte : le manager d’Irving était Bram Stoker, c’est donc possible ! Une nouvelle édition de la biographie de Robespierre écrite par George Henry Lewes en 1849 a également été réimprimée pour accompagner la pièce, et Ange Galdemar a écrit un roman basé sur le scénario.

In 1899, the famous British actor Henry Irving commissioned a play from the French dramatist Victorien Sardou, already notorious for Thermidor : Robespierre. Sardou revised an 1895 script, in which Robespierre is shot by his adult illegitimate son ; in the new play, he shoots himself in order to save this son from the guillotine. This narrative was perhaps more credible for Irving, at sixty-one, than for Robespierre, who was barely thirty-six. Clarisse, Robespierre’s aristocratic former lover and mother of his son, was played by Ellen Terry, who frequently acted with Irving and was his former lover in real life.

The play was a great success and was performed in Britain and in the United States. This booklet, illustrated by Harry Furniss in the Art Nouveau style, was produced to be sold in the theatres. It is uncertain who wrote the text : Irving’s manager was Bram Stoker, so that is possible ! A new edition of George Henry Lewes’ 1849 biography of Robespierre was also reprinted to accompany the play, and Ange Galdemar wrote a novel based upon the script.
